Exhilarating, challenging, and enjoyable!
My experience at the University of Alberta as a General Sciences student has been exhilarating, challenging, and enjoyable!
The classes I am currently taking are Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Statistics and Philosophy. I love being able to take the science classes I am passionate about, but it’s also nice to be taking an intriguing arts course that is completely different from my other classes. This balance has enabled me to further my interests in the sciences and social justice.
Participating in student groups has allowed me to meet many amazing people here on campus! As a member of the U of A Amnesty International group, it is validating to collaborate with people committed to raising awareness of human rights issues. I have also had the opportunity to write for a new online magazine created entirely by U of A students, called The Wanderer Online, which has given me the platform to express my views on a wide range of topics, from politics to new books!
As a dancer, I was excited to learn about Orchesis, the U of A’s modern and jazz dance group. In addition to taking a weekly jazz class, I have also been rehearsing with a small group of dancers to perform in Orchesis’ annual recital, Dance Motif, in January. My choreographer has created a contemporary routine about the oppression of women, and how this oppression obstructs peace. It feels wonderful to partake in an art form I love, while also addressing an important social issue.
As a Schulich Leader, I believe that it is important to embrace the opportunities we have to develop our leadership skills through interactions with others, and the commitment to making the world a better place. I am so happy to be at the University of Alberta, where I have been able to focus on both academics and leadership.
